Teresa Swanson’s sign said it all: “Come to Peoria!” Fans don’t just want to see the band, but they want to buy new AC/DC merch.

“We love AC/DC,” said Swanson, 44, of Chillicothe. “I’m a child of the ’80s.”

Peoria radio station WIXO-FM organized the rally in hopes of catching the attention of the band, which has not performed in Peoria since 1983.

Matt Bahan, host of The X’s morning show, came up with the idea after the release of AC/DC’s new album, “Black Ice.”

“We’re going to prove to AC/DC that we’re out of our minds,” said Bahan, who dressed as band member Angus Young. “We want them here, and I think it’s due time that they come back.”

There was a question whether AC/DC was welcome in Peoria after the band shot off cannons during its last performance at Carver Arena. Bahan said he investigated the situation and discovered the alleged ban was an urban legend.

AC/DC hits blared Saturday as fans lined up to sign a petition at the start of the rally. A video of the event, along with the petition, will be sent Monday to AC/DC. More than 1,000 signatures were collected on The X’s Web site before the event.

The station also has gotten AC/DC’s attention by talking with its managers, Bahan said.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis appeared on stage at the rally. He told AC/DC fans after the band sees the video, it will have no choice but to come back.

Ardis had appeared on The X’s morning show and assured listeners AC/DC is welcome.

“It would be great for Peoria,” Ardis said.

Also expressing his approval at the rally Saturday was concert promoter Jay Goldberg.

Nathaniel Pohl, 16, of Peoria - also dressed as Angus Young - danced and spun on the wet ground in hopes of getting his favorite band to come to town.

“They stand the test of time,” he said. “They never change their sound.”

Bahan later gave Pohl the nickname “Angus Junior.”

Bahan estimates an answer on whether or not AC/DC will perform should come in the next six weeks.

“It would be the biggest event of this decade,” he said.
